Can You Download Private Facebook Videos?

On Facebook, a video is private whenever its audience is anything other than Public. Each post has an audience setting: Public, Friends, Friends except…, Specific friends, Only me or Custom. Groups add a second layer: anyone can see posts in a public group, but only members see posts in a private group.

Why Can’t an Online Tool Download a Private Facebook Video?
An online downloader can’t download a private video because it never logs in to Facebook, so it only sees the page a logged-out visitor sees. For a private video, that page shows no video file at all — there is nothing to download.

How to Download Your Own Private Facebook Videos
Your own videos, including Only me and friends-only uploads, can be exported with Facebook’s Download your information feature in Accounts Center. Menu names can change, but the path currently looks like this:
- Open Facebook and go to Settings & privacy → Settings.
- Open Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions → Download your information.
- Choose to download your information, select your Facebook profile and pick only the categories that contain your posts and videos.
- Pick a date range and, if offered, a high media quality, then submit the request.
- When Facebook says the file is ready, download the archive from the same page and unzip it.
Preparing the archive can take a while for large accounts. If your video is public, pasting its link into the downloader is faster.
Does the Page-Source Method Work for Private Videos?
The page-source method only works for a video you can already watch while logged in. It means opening the video on a computer, viewing the page’s HTML source and copying the video file address out of it — it doesn’t work on phones, and it can’t reveal a video your account isn’t allowed to see.

The legitimate way to save a non-public video is to get it from the person who owns it. Ask the uploader to send you the original file, which is also better quality than any copy, or to change the post’s audience to Public so it can be downloaded.
- Private groups: ask the member who posted the video to send you the file.
